A Prayer for Sunday (St. Jerome)

saint jeromeSaint Jerome was one of the greatest biblical scholars of the early church, famous for his Bible translation (the Vulgate) and his many commentaries. ┬áBut he was also well known as a theologian, historian, and proponent of Christian asceticism. So Jerome’s influence extended in many directions, making him one of the most significant early Christian thinkers.

Although St. Jerome lived much of his life in Rome, he spent his last decades living in a small hermit cell in Bethlehem, where he died on September 30, 420. In memory of his passing, this Sunday’s prayer comes from him.

O Lord, show Your mercy to me
and gladden my heart.

I am like the man on the way to Jericho
who was overtaken by robbers,
wounded and left for dead.

O Good Samaritan,
come to my aid.
I am like the sheep that went astray.

O Good Shepherd,
seek me out and bring me home
in accord with Your will.

Let me dwell in Your house
all the days of my life
and praise You for ever and ever
with those who are there.
