- Walk over to your computer.
- Turn on your computer.
- Back your computer up.
It’s really that simple. But, it will save you unbelievable grief. Do you remember what it was like when your first boyfriend/girlfriend broke up with you? Losing everything on your computer is worse. You’ll cry for hours and eat all the junk food in the house. It’s really not worth the risk.
And, if your computer has a bunch of research that you’ve been doing for a class – or, worse, your thesis, the risk is far higher. I just heard from a student who lost years worth of research because he didn’t back up regularly. You really don’t want to go through that.
Back up now or see if you can buy therapy in bulk.
At the very least, back up to another computer or a second hard drive. An even better solution is to back up off site. That way, if a giant meatball crushes your house, your data will survive. Personally, I like Drobox. Dropbox allows me to automatically sync files among the various computers that I use, and it makes sure that my files are always current no matter what happens. (By the way, if you’re interested in using Dropbox as your backup solution, please use this link. I’ll get extra storage that way.)
I don’t really care what backup solution you use, just make sure that you back up.
I mean it.
Stop watching TV and go back up your computer.
Really, I’ve got better things to do than wait around here all day. Just back it up. You’ll thank me later.
