Yesterday was Western’s annual faculty vs. students softball game. Although the students put up a stiff resistance this year and even took the lead in the top half of the final inning, they could not prevail. With two outs and runners on second and third, Dr. Norm Thiesen hit the game-winning single with a shot into shallow center field. Exhausted and in desperate need of some Bengay and a hot bath, the faculty were still very pleased with the result.

My day-after reflections on the game so far have been entirely consumed with thoughts like “I’m sore”, “Why am I so sore?”, “How did that muscle get sore?”, and “Do I even have a muscle there?” Apparently sitting at a desk all day and occasionally moving papers from one side of my desk to the other to make it look like I’m actually getting some work done is inadequate preparation for a softball game. But, I survived. So, now I have a whole year to recover before I have to do it again.
