This was fascinating. Earlier this morning, I pointed out the sign with the “Why are there still monkeys?” argument against evolution. From the comments that I received, I’m going to assume that most of the people reading this blog were able to figure out that I was being entirely sarcastic when I described this argument as “irrefutable” and demonstrating “rigorous logic.” Just in case there was any doubt, yes, I was being sarcastic. This is, of course, a terrible argument.
The fascinating thing is that I liked the sign enough that I decided to post this on my personal blog as well. I don’t use that blog very much, but it is connected to my facebook page, which means that it generates a very different group of readers. After gettings two comments on the blog, one on FB, and several in person, all of which indicated that people thought I was saying this was a good argument against evolution, I found myself with some explaining to do.
Same post, two very different reactions. Sarcasm is a tricky thing. One might think that this experience would teach me to use sarcasm less. I’m sure I’ll do just that.
