The quote of the day so far has been “It’s easier to recycle than to be kind to your fellow man.” The implication was that many people today use environmental concerns to hide from our obligation to love and care for other humans.
I think a better application would be our tendency to use small moral actions to hide from larger moral failure. So, I highlight the fact that I’m generally polite and don’t lie to people, while ignoring my deep seated selfishness and lack of compassion. Or, I’m proud of the fact that I regularly recycle, while hiding from the destructive consequences of my consumerist lifestyle. Either way, I’m trying to hide inside my own morality. In that sense it truly is easier to recycle than to be kind to other human persons.
